Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994)
Sam Francis occupies a prominent position in post-war American painting. Although associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement, unlike many American painters of the time he had direct and prolonged exposure to French painting and to Japanese art which had an individual impact on his work. During his career he travelled extensively throughout Europe and Japan, always returning to his native California.

Influenced by the works of abstract expressionists Sam Francis established himself as one of the premier colorists of the twentieth century. He developed his own style in his use of space and color and light and the configurations of these elements varied over different time periods. In his early works his structures were disciplined and structured and over time these more rigid structures gave way to looser configurations.

Sam Francis� artwork is included in many public and private collections throughout the world including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Phillips Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Tate Gallery, London, and the Kunstmuseum, Basel.
