Man Ray (American, 1890-1976)

While best known for his photography, Man Ray was not constrained by the boundaries of any particular medium. He made photographs, paintings, assemblages, drawings, sculptures, and films. Most of his adult life was spent in Paris, but he returned to the states in 1940 for a dissatisfying 10 year stay in Los Angeles where he felt his work did not receive the recognition it deserved. Ironically, 50 years later, he is recognized as one of the most important artists of the 20th century and Los Angeles is where his work as a photographer can best be appreciated. Man Ray was closely associated with two major cultural movements, Surrealism and Dadaism.
